In 1948 the Canadian Authors Association (Manitoba Branch) and the Women's Canadian Club of Winnipeg initiated a prize for a short story written by a Manitoba resident. For the first 13 years it was co-sponsored by the two groups and then, for a few years, it was solely sponsored by the CAA (Manitoba Branch). From 1948-1959 the contest was called the Manitoba Writers' Contest. From 1963-1986 the Eaton's department store shared sponsorship and it was renamed the Lady Eaton Short Story Contest. From 1987-2000 full sponsorship was again the responsibility of the CAA (Manitoba Branch). During this time it was named the Marie Barton Award for Short Fiction. In 1972, the Young Writers Short Story Contest was introduced and in 1989 this contest was divided into two categories: young writers (grades 10 to 12) and juvenile (grades 7 to 9). Only the winners of the adult contests are given. The CAA (Manitoba Branch) also collaborated with the Winnipeg Free Press to offer the Winnipeg Free Press Non-Fiction Contest (which see). There was a cash award.
