Prairie Fire Writing Contests

Named in memory of the Canadian poet Bliss Carman. From 1957 to 1990 the award was given for the best poem submitted by a student of the Banff School of Fine Arts or of the University of Alberta Department of Extension writing class. The contest was discontinued in 1991 and then revived in 1997 by the magazine Prairie Fire as a contest open to all Canadians. The Banff Centre continues to contribute a cash prize and a replica of Bliss Carman's turquoise and silver ring for the winning poet. The winning poems are published in Prairie Fire.
